Premier League: Perfect start for Carrick with derby win, Arsenal held by Nottingham Forest

Londin, Jan 18
Michael Carrick debuted with the best possible result on Saturday as Manchester United beat local rival Manchester City 2-0 at Old Trafford.

Bryan Mbeumo finished off a perfect counterattack to put United ahead in the 65th minute, and Matheus Cunha then squared the ball for Patrick Dorgu to double the lead in the 76th minute and seal the points for the home side.

City struggled to contain its neighbor's pace throughout the match, and once again Erling Haaland struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford, reported Xinhua.

Arsenal was unable to take full advantage of Manchester City's defeat, as a solid defensive display from Nottingham Forest held Mikel Arteta's side to a 0-0 draw, although the result still stretched its lead at the top of the table to seven points.

Joao Pedro's first-half goal from Enzo Fernandez's assist steadied nerves and put Chelsea on the way to a 2-0 home win over Brentford in Liam Rosenior's league debut as Chelsea coach.

Brentford started the day above Chelsea in the Premier League, but Cole Palmer's 76th-minute penalty assured Rosenior's side three points that lifted Chelsea above its South London neighbor.

Florian Wirtz continued his positive scoring run to put Liverpool ahead against struggling Burnley, but Scott Parker's side again showed its fighting spirit, with Marcus Edwards equalizing in the 65th minute with Burnley's only shot on target.

Liverpool had 11 shots between the posts but was unable to find a way past Martin Dubravka in the Burnley goal.

Enzo Le Fee and Brian Brobbey got Sunderland back to winning ways with a 2-1 home victory over Crystal Palace. Yeremy Pino had put Crystal Palace ahead, but 24 hours after coach Oliver Glasner announced he would leave at the end of the season, his side was unable to hold on.

Lukas Nmecha's low strike at the start of injury time gave Leeds United a 1-0 win at home to Fulham, a result made even more significant as West Ham gave itself a lifeline with a 2-1 win away to Tottenham.

Callum Wilson scored a 93rd-minute goal for West Ham, after the match had looked to be heading for a draw with Crysencio Summerville putting West Ham ahead after 15 minutes and Cristian Romero leveling from Pedro Porro's assist with 26 minutes left.
