Rekha Nair organizes South Asian Wedding Show on May 1st at Ohio

Mannara Chopra will be the celebrity guest who would be walking as a show stopper for the local business Slick Chics.

Rekha Nair spoke to Indialife and emalayalee

What is your inspiration for organizing the event?
In Ohio we do not have any wedding shows focused on south Asian culture. As our community is growing, there is a need for wedding professionals catering to south Asian communities. This is an attempt to fill up the void.

 

ow did you get in to the entertainment industry?

My main focus is the empowerment of women and supporting those who want to achieve in the fashion industry as models, fashion designers, and women entrepreneurs. I try to create events incorporating all these aspects together and also support local efforts

 

How long have you been in this filed?
This is the second year I am organizing the show. The last show I organized was in 2019.

What are the other events you organized?
Miss India Ohio happens every year

What is your personal and professional background?
I am an IT professional with a passion for fashion industry, which led me to become state director for Miss India Ohio contest. I started the journey working for cultural associations and coordinating and choreographing fashion shows for different events. I worked as secretary of Columbus Malayalee Association in 2016, VP for Federation of Indian Associations (FIA), Columbus in 2017, and vice in 2018

 

Who supported you in the past?
Many in the local community has supported these efforts through these years . Few of the women entrepreneurs have supported this journey throughout. Special thanks to Ravi Samineni of TANA and Sony Chowdhary, owner of slic chics among others.

I came to US in 2011. I am a math graduate and have a masters in Business Administration. I work in a leading financial firm in Columbus

What kind of crowd attend events like this?

South Asian wedding show gets around 1000 plus walk ins mostly those who have their wedding or engagement coming up and people who like to shop and support local business are in the crowd

People from Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Dayton attend the event.

Who are your main supporters?
A set of women entrepreneurs who have similar interest and they support each other

What do you gain from organizing this event?
This event is creating a platform for local business to thrive and network. This is the second year which has not seen any profits. But we expect it to change.

‘Fashion is in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening,’ is a quote stated by Coco Chanel for me. I have always been fascinated with every aspect of the fashion industry.

At this point of life the events are something I am doing out of passion but in the long run I would love to be able to make this as my full time career. I want to be able to bring and support women owned businesses and create multiple platforms to support and encourage aspiring youngsters, who do not get a chance to excel.

 

Working in fashion has always been my biggest goal and now organizing events brings my dreams to life.

I have 10 year old boy and 9 year old girl whom I adore and who support my work.
